Well all the training i’ve been doing the past couple of weeks paid off this weekend.
What a day! It was amazing! Intense! I can’t find the right word to describe the event other than WOW.
It started the night before the race. I spent the evening preparing my things for the morning event. I had an early dinner then started packing my bag.
Check list:
1. Spare Bike in car
2. Triathlon suit
3. Goggles
4. Running shoes
5. Sun glasses
6. Sun block
7. Cap
8. Towel
9. The list goes on …
After a good night’s sleep i woke up at 4:00am. I was so excited, prayed, had a light breakfast and read a few pages from a book i’ve been reading recently.
I left the house at around 6:00am and headed to the club where the race will start. Registered my name and got a stand for the bike at the transition zone.
Before i know it i was in the middle of the crowd about to run to the sea and do the swimming part of the race. It all happened so fast.
There i was in the middle of the crowd swimming away. Trying not to hit anyone while swimming. It was an amazing feeling. We finished the 750 meters and i was off running to get my bike.
After a slow transition where i had to wash my feet before wearing my shoes because we were running on the beach i was good to go.
Took some of the energy gel i was carrying and i was peddling away. 5.. 10.. 15.. 17 kilometers. 5 to go i thought to myself. I have to catch the two people i see infront of me. I got them. I dropped the bike at the transition zone, put on my cap and started running. Or should i say wobbling away.
I couldn’t! my lower back was killing me. I couldn’t run, i think i pulled a muscle during the swim but i managed to get myself together when my brother caught up to me and asked if i was alright. I thought i have to try and keep up. Just don’t think about the pain.
In the distance i could see the finish line. 200 meters to go. I can’t believe it is about to be over. Give it all you’ve got. Come on! i told myself. I sprinted to the end and was so happy to see the welcoming face of my wife at the finish line.
I raced for 1 hour and 45 minutes which is not so good for a triathelete but i think it is decent for a first timer that only had two weeks notice before the event.
All i could think about after the race is “I want more!” When is the next race? I loved being surrouned by such fit people. It is ridiculous seeing how healthy and fit the competitiors were. Mainly expats from Saudi. I so want to reach that level.
I will continue training the same way and inshallah reach the top one day!
